Mr. Barrie is a practicing attorney in the Cayman Islands and a partner in the firm of Nelson & Co., Attorneys at Law, Grand Cayman and a director of Maricorp Services Ltd.., a company engaged in the business of company management and licensed under the laws of the Cayman Islands and regulated by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.
He qualified as a solicitor in Scotland in 1983 and held the position of Associate Solicitor with a leading law firm in Edinburgh, Scotland prior to moving to the Cayman Islands in May 1990. He has been in private practice in the Cayman Islands since then where he has gained wide experience in all areas of offshore financial services legal work and in particular extensive experience in dealing with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and the application of Cayman’s anti-money laundering laws and regulations and general corporate governance issues as they affect Cayman Islands companies.
Mr. Barrie has acted as Cayman legal adviser to many of the worlds leading financial institutions and multilateral institutional lenders in connection with Cayman investment vehicles being used in the privatization of the electricity and telephone industries in Central and South America, he has also served as Counsel in the formation, registration and termination of numerous Cayman Islands mutual funds. He also acts as adviser to a number of Cayman based banks and trust companies on issues of Cayman Islands trust and corporate law.
