Mr Nelson is a practising attorney in the Cayman Islands and partner of the Cayman law firm, Nelson & Company, which he established in 1994. Nelson & Company is a well regarded boutique law firm focussing primarily on corporate and commercial law, financing, mutual funds and other investment vehicles.
Mr Nelson has been a permanent resident of the Cayman Islands since 1987 and holds “Caymanian Status” under Caymanian immigration law. He is the founding director of Maricorp Services Ltd, a licensed corporate management company regulated by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (“CIMA”) and director of another financial institution licensed by CIMA.
Mr Nelson was admitted as a solicitor in England in 1980 (and remains on the roll) and was made a partner in 1984 of one of the leading London firms of solicitors specialising in maritime and commercial law. After more than 7 years post qualification experience as a solicitor in London, Mr Nelson relocated to the Cayman Islands in 1987 and was admitted that year as a Cayman Islands attorney. Since that time Mr Nelson has been in private practice as a Cayman Islands attorney and has gained wide experience in most areas of offshore financial services and has had extensive interaction with CIMA.
Mr Nelson is also a Cayman Islands Notary Public, Council Member of the Law Society and member of the Society of Estate and Trust Practitioners. Mr Nelson has been instructed as Cayman legal adviser by numerous leading financial and commercial institutions and acted on the establishment of mutual funds and other investment vehicles. In addition, Mr Nelson has wide experience in corporate mergers, amalgamations, reorganisations, restructuring and public listings. Mr Nelson is well versed in anti-money laundering regulations, has broad experience of corporate governance issues and has been retained by Lloyds underwriters to advise and represent parties on contentious issues arising from directors duties and responsibilities.
